Interview with Johnny Winter - 2/15/14 - Rams Head On Stage - Annapolis, MD, On February 15, 2014 The Johnny Winter Band played Rams Head On Stage in Annapolis, MD. We got the chance to interview him on the bus. What an honor. The legendary blues guitarist played a 90 minute set of his unique brand of Texas rockin' blues to an appreciative crowd of loyal fans. Although Mr. Winter is nearing 70 -- his birthday is February 23rd -- and has been through many rough years that have taken a toll on him both physically and to some extent musically, his signature sound was in full swing that night. Opening with "Johnny B. Goode", the band roared through such hits as "Blackjack" by Ray Charles and "It's All Over Now" written by the Valentinos and made famous by the Rolling Stones. His band, Paul Nelson (guitar), Scott Spray (bass), and Tommy Curiale (drums) drove the music behind Johnny, sounding great, and allowing Johnny to showcase his signature style. The highlight of the show (for me) was when Johnny finally strapped on his Firebird guitar and broke out his slide, which he wields as if a natural extension of his hand. Tempered with age, yes - but still - no one plays the guitar or has the same raw blues-appeal as Mr. Johnny Winter.
